Split Check

Recently, we were approached to provide filmmaking experience for a student, but rather than looking over zoom lenses and discussing exposure whilst filming fishing boats in Old Leigh, we wanted to do something more creative.

A fresh new script was written, actors were hired and a location secured; to shoot a short film from beginning to end, as well as editing! All in one day. Mission, accepted.

A simple restaurant scene was the setting for this story, between two characters. A dialogue heavy, character driven short film that allowed the actors to explore and work together to create an emotional piece in a short amount of time. Although not the most ground-breaking concept, it was a perfect setup for our student to jump right in to see how independent filmmaking can be done.

Obviously, it’s almost impossible to cover everything in filmmaking all in one day. Explaining each step of the process, director Daniel Keeble set up the lights and camera equipment himself whilst the actors worked on the script in another room. With careful planning, allowing time to talk over each element of the process, our student was able to really take in the fundamentals.

We worked with ARK Indie Productions in making this short film, and the story goes hand-in-hand with the indie, locally-produced films they make. We were so happy with how engaged and enthusiastic our student was throughout the day, and this again falls in line with the values and how ARK Indie Productions do things, giving opportunities to young filmmakers wanting to learn and develop their own skills.

We’re super happy with how the film turned out, and ARK Indie Productions intend to push it to upcoming film festivals throughout the year ahead.
